In SA we did not have loads of affordable substrates, one of the DIY substrates is to use palm fiber peat (PFP) add some nutrients and cap it with silica.
In 2012 I got my hands on some ADA ( local entrepreneur has decided to land some product) and did this little experiment.

| | Background: The PFP vs ADA experiment was run over a 11 month period. Plants had a shared water column and sunlight was the light source. No CO2 was introduced.
Conclusion: ADA is the winner, based on overall development of leaf and root growth.
